Life is all about understanding your situation and overcoming troubles. When I injured my hamstring, I thought this would diminish my chances at fighting as it would be difficult to kick for some time at least. As most of you know, ‘Kicks’ are important in a fight, especially when your opponent can perform them without trouble. Continue reading

This concept is pretty simple but, most often overlooked in dojos. Students are told to work harder every time, but this concept is an extension of that. Teaching the students this perspective will change their attitude towards the hard training regimen and they will embrace it with open hands. Continue reading
There used to be those good old days when our excitement would surge when we would learn something new as kids. That would be usually followed by a month of constant practice of the same thing over and over again, until we got bored with it or we were taught something new. This excitement served us well to train our muscle memory(though we didn’t know what muscle memory was back then). Our Sensei would also feel the excitement and would be willing to lead us in every possible way. Continue reading
It’s all about punching and kicking when you enter a dojo and start learning Martial Arts. Learning how to score points has become the norm nowadays in the dojo. Even the Karatekas understand the language of ‘scoring points’ only. We explain anything in the traditional sense and all we get back is a weird stare from them. But, tell them that you can score easily this way and they learn quickly. Continue reading
Empty your mind, be formless, shapeless—like water. Now you put water into a cup, it becomes the cup, you put water into a bottle, it becomes the bottle, you put it in a teapot, it becomes the teapot. Now water can flow or it can crash. Be water, my friend.

At the first instance, everyone wonders what is the purpose of Horse stance. It is practically impossible to fight in this stance, other than used as a transitional stance. You are bound to be more surprised when you see Shaolin Monks(on T.V or Internet or lucky enough to see them live) staying in this stance for hours. Continue reading
I am sure many of the Martial Arts students were taught Kata(forms) within three or four weeks of joining. But many of us[including me when I joined] usually wonder what use will be a Kata, which is just movements which involve many types of blocks, punches and different kicks. There are around 100 different types of Katas across the various styles of Karate. Continue reading
We all have seen movies based on Martial Arts and have been fascinated with all the moves done by the actors. What we really don’t understand is the real concept of performing such move. We[including me] watch the movies and appreciate. A little more effort is required to understand the real purpose.
Learning Martial Arts is not just about practicing and performing impressive moves. The real intention of the art you are practicing is to understand the moves so that you can perform it when you need to save your life! When you learn the Art, it is important that you ask your instructor to explain the concept so that you learn it the right way. Continue reading
